In 1999, I was invited by Mike Luther to attend the Yankee Air Force Museum’s “Mustangs & Mustangs event at Willow Run. Since that time Mike Luther and Kevin Walsh have turned the annual event called Thunder Over Michigan into one of North America’s largest and most popular Warbird Airshows.

In 2000, Thunder Over Michigan airshow featured the Commemorative Air Force’s B-29 “FiFi” and B-24 Diamond Lil with symposium guests that included Paul Tibbits and Dutch Van Kirk.

Thunder Over Michigan’s 2001 symposium featured Col. Francis “Gabby” Gabreski, America’s top scoring ace in Europe during World War Two.

2002 featured a gathering of B-25 Mitchells with the symposium based on Naval pilots.

By 2003 Thunder Over Michigan had made a name for themselves and it was a show not to be missed. Aircraft on the ramp included several Reno Racers, the Collings Foundation and Vern Rayburn’s Constellation.

2004 boasted a line-up of eleven TBM Avengers along with many other rare warbirds.

Three P-47 Thunderbolts and a Messerschmidt BF-109 lead the line-up of warbirds for 2005. Around this time the famous ground battles started to take shape at TOM and are now a most anticipated part of the airshow.

2006 saw several Planes of Fame aircraft attend while Thunderbolts and Mustangs beat up the ground battle. The Bf-109 returned to fly with a Hawker Hurricane and the Canadian Armed Forces Skyhawks Parachute team performed.

The Blue Angels performed at TOM 2007 but the star attraction was one of the largest gatherings B-25 Mitchells ever assembled to date.

Two B-24s in formation and a 357th Heritage Flight consisting of a specially marked C-130 and Jack Roush’s P-51B Mustang were some of the highlights for 2008.

Thunder Over Michigan 2009 celebrated the first flight of the C-130 Hercules and boasted a ramp full of the transports. Aircraft from Vietnam were also featured.

2010 featured a gathering of six Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses complimented with the Colling’s Foundation’s B-24 Liberator. The Horseman P-51 formation aerobatic team and a North American F-100 Super Sabre helped round out the event.

The 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation was the theme for Thunder Over Michigan 2011. Five Corsairs and two flying Mitsubishi Zero’s were just some of the many interesting aircraft assembled.

The 2012 edition of TOM featured a North American P-51 Mustang round-up. Other feature acts included P-38 “Ruff Stuff” and Art Nalls and his Royal Navy Sea Harrier.

Thunder Over Michigan 2013 featured a salute to the Vietnam Era. Along with a great flying display that saw Navy Legacy and North American Aviation Heritage Flights the event featured two ground battles. Sean Tucker and Michael Goulian also entertained the crowds with thrilling aerobatic displays.

Each year Thunder Over Michigan features different warbirds from across North America which keeps the flightline fresh. Combined with great airshow acts like the US Navy Blue Angles and military demonstrations the shows are always action packed. The venue includes all your airshow essentials: Friday arrival taxiway access, the largest airshow photo pit, VIP Chalets, grandstand seating, food vendors and aviation markets. For families there are play areas and cooling stations available. Thunder Over Michigan is a show not to be missed.
