It was sometime in 1986, I saw a news segment on TV about a group in Geneseo, New York who had purchased a retired water-bomber B-17 Flying Fortress and planned to fly it off a grass strip. Later that year we saw the B-17 and Dr. Bill Anderson’s P-40 at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s airshow in Hamilton, Ontario. In the fall we made a scouting trip to this place called Geneseo and fell in love with the area. Our first sight driving up Big Tree Lane was the tail of the B-17 sticking out of a makeshift shelter. The whole grass roots feeling of Geneseo was like nothing we had ever seen before. |

We were allowed to tour the B-17 and wander through the museum freely. At the time Dr. Bill’s P-40 was being taped up to the have the Flying Tigers Sharks Mouth and R.T. Smiths markings applied. |

We returned to Geneseo for the 1987 Airshow where we were amazed by the venue. Freedom to wander the flightline combined with a flawless countryside as a backdrop was something we had never seen before. We were hooked. |

From 1987 on Geneseo was a show not to be missed. In 1988, we saw six B-17s take to the air in a mass flypast that included several P-51s and a P-40. |

Geneseo 1989 offered a chance to see the Canadian Warplane Heritage’s Avro Lancaster operate off a grass strip as well as this unique heavy bomber formation. |

Also at the 1989 Airshow David Tallichet’s ex-Swedish Air Force A4-DW Skyraider flew in under a S-64 Tarhe helicopter. |

The following years offered many great sights and in 2012 the Geneseo Airshow is still a highly anticipated event in the North East United States. |
