Planning a multi-aircraft air-to-air shoot is always a challenge. First issue is finding a time when everyone involved is available for a few hours. For this shoot we needed six people’s schedule to align, the weather to cooperate and all aircraft to be serviceable.

My good friend Hannu offered his Harvard as a photoship. The Harvard, being an ex-RCAF trainer, offered speed and a good shooting platform. Hannu, along with one of the TBM owners, Osama Arafat, are based at Oshawa Airport CYOO so that was the chosen location to meet. Since Osama is not a formation qualified pilot we recruited Robert Baldasaro to fly his TBM during the shoot.

Joining us from the Waterloo Airport was TBM owner, Ken Adams and aviation writer Richard Pittet who would be writing the article for Canadian Aviator. Richard, a current airline pilot who also flew for the Canadian Armed Forces and is a trained formation pilot so he flew Ken’s TBM for the shoot.

After rescheduling once we picked a morning in June when all of us were available. The night before the weather looked promising so the go-ahead was given. Unfortunately, the weather in the morning was drizzle and very low ceiling. With hopes of the weather breaking Ken and Rich arrived from Waterloo and we all rendezvoused in Osama’s hangar and waited for a clearing. This gave us time to brief the flight and for everyone to get to know each other. The rain stopped after an hour so with time running out in our busy schedules we prepped the planes and took off.

Being the photoship Hannu and I took off first and headed east along Lake Ontario shoreline to our rendezvous point over Newcastle. It did not take long for the two TBMs to catch us and slowly ease into formation. Despite having very little or no time in the TBM’s Richard and Robert did a magnificent job holding formation on the Harvard. They made my job easy but the weather was my real enemy. Dark storm clouds kept the sun from shinning on us.

My wife, Bernadette, flew with Robert and Osama in the second TBM and captured these images from the number 3 position.

Despite the weather it was a great experience for all involved.
